Our experienced team of ENT clinicians treat a diverse range of conditions of the ear, nose and throat that can be related to problems with hearing, balance, sleep and snoring, swallowing and breathing.
Common procedures include removal of tonsils or adenoids, insertion of grommets, complex middle ear surgery, sinus surgery and correction of broken noses.
Kaweka Hospital is the first surgical facility in Hawke’s Bay to invest in the latest laser technology offering an unparalleled level of precision for surgery and a faster recovery for our patients. The TruBlue laser will be used by our ENT team for specific procedures such as treating and removal of leukoplakia, papillomas and polyps, Reincke’s oedema and capillary Ectasia and conditions in the middle ear. It is used to coagulate and vaporize for bloodless surgery. We are also the first in Hawke’s Bay to invest in the latest image guidance system, also known as Stealth Navigation, allowing our surgeons to perform surgery of the sinuses and ear more accurately, safely and reducing the risk of revision surgery required.

Andrew did his training in the South Trent region, UK, including 2 years in Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and a Rhinology Fellowship in Plymouth.
Prior to coming to New Zealand, Andrew was a consultant in Cheltenham & Gloucester Hospitals where he was Programme Director for the Junior Doctors.

Mr Cristian Slough

Cristian is a new transplant to New Zealand. Having worked both in the UK and the USA he is familiar with various different medical systems. Cristian, his wife Carrie (an Audiologist) and their two young sons, decided that a move to New Zealand was the adventure they were looking for and have found working and living in Hawke’s Bay a delight.
Cristian completed undergraduate medical training at the University of Nottingham Medical School, UK 1998 completing his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degrees (BMBS) in 2000. His initial post-graduate years as a junior doctor were undertaken in the UK obtaining his Membership to the Royal College of Surgeons in 2004. After completing a Fellowship in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Boston USA, he went on to complete a residency in Otolaryngology in at Oregon Health and Sciences University. He then worked in private practice for 10 years in Portland, Oregon, becoming Chief of Staff of his local hospital. After completing his tenure Cristian and his family set their sights on a move to New Zealand to experience the wonderful opportunities this country has to offer.

General surgery & Endoscopy
Kaweka Hospital’s skilled general surgeons treat conditions related to the digestive system (upper gastro-intestinal organs, colon and rectum), the gall bladder, breast and other endocrine organs, skin and subcutaneous structures.
Common diagnostic and surgical procedures include colonoscopy*, gastroscopy*, gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, breast and thyroid surgery, bowel surgery and haemorrhoid surgery. Some of these operations can be offered laparoscopically.
*These procedures involve inserting a camera into the colon or the upper digestive system (oesophagus, stomach and upper intestines) to diagnose conditions or detect changes in these organs.

Mr Bernard McEntee

Bernard grew up in Hawke’s Bay, attending Havelock North High School.
He worked at Hawke’s Bay Hospital 2005-2007 and 2010 and returned again in 2015 as a Consultant General Surgeon specialising in Colorectal and Laparoscopic Surgery.
2012: Obtained Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons as a General Surgeon.
2013: Post Fellowship training in Colorectal Surgery, Waikato Hospital.
2014: Post Fellowship training in Colorectal Surgery, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane.

Mr Bevan Jenkins

Originally from Auckland, Bevan worked in the Hawke’s Bay Hospital twice during junior doctor rotations. He returned permanently in 2017 to take up a post as a Consultant General Surgeon, establishing a practice in both the public and private sector and he is married to a local GP.
Bevan completed undergraduate medical training at the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Human Biology (BHB) in 2003 and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) in 2006. Post-graduate years as a junior doctor were undertaken in Hawke’s Bay, Auckland, Rotorua, New Plymouth and Palmerston North. Specialist General Surgical training was completed over that time with admission as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2015. Post-fellowship training undertaken in 2016 at the Royal Darwin Hospital in Rural and Trauma Surgery. Accreditation as a certified Endoscopist was acquired in 2015 for both Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy by the New Zealand Conjoint Committee.

Dr Sid Trivedi

Sid returns to the Hawke’s Bay as a Consultant General Surgeon after commencing his surgical training here as a registrar in 2008. He completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) in 2004 and was awarded the Stanley Batchelor Memorial Prize in Surgery.
His Specialist General Surgical training was completed throughout the North Island and he was admitted to the fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2015. Post fellowship training in Breast and Endocrine surgery was undertaken at Waikato Hospital and he took a consultant position in Palmerston North. He moved with his wife and two sons to practise in Hawke’s Bay in 2020.

Dr Guy Vautier
Gynaecologists specialise in women’s health, particularly treatment relating to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, pelvic floor and vagina. Our expert clinicians treat menstrual issues, endometriosis, pelvic floor problems, cancer and all conditions of the female reproductive system.
Common surgical procedures include the removal of cysts, polyps and fibroids, hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), treatment of abnormal vaginal bleeding, prolapse and incontinence and colposcopy to remove pre-cancerous cells detected by cervical screening.

Dr Kirsten Gaerty

Kirsten is a consultant Obstetrician Gynaecologist and has obtained both her Medical degree and a Post-graduate Diploma in Obstetrics and Medical Gynaecology from the University of Otago. Subsequent to these accomplishments she embarked upon her Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist training and completed this in 2014 upon being awarded her Fellowship (FRANZCOG).
She has a special interest in complex obstetrics and completed an 18 month Fellowship (Mater Mothers Hospital, Brisbane) in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Whilst in Brisbane Kirsten also completed the highly complementary DDU (a post-graduate Diploma in Diagnostic Ultrasound).
Kirsten provides care in all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Obstetric interests and expertise are outlined above and areas of interest in gynaecology include pre-conception counselling, fertility assessment and the management of heavy periods. Kirsten is involved in quality improvement in her role at the DHB and strives to provide up to date evidence based practice and is a senior Clinical lecturer for the university of Otago. Kirsten works closely with Dr Elaine White in their practice ALL WOMEN obstetrics and gynaecology.
In addition to expert pre-conception advice, ante-natal consultations and a small shared care private Obstetric practice. Kirsten also offers professional care and services for general gynaecological problems.

Dr Agnieszka (Aggie) Them

Aggie is a New Zealand-trained generalist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. After completing her medical degree in Poland, she went on to earn a Masters degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from University College Cork, Ireland.
Aggie moved to New Zealand in 2012 to continue growing her career, working in Tauranga and Christchurch. She then began her specialist training in Wellington and completed it in Hawke’s Bay where she pursued advanced training in laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and colposcopy. She coupled this with an executive-ready programme for women in leadership.
Passionate about empowering women with respect to their bodies, Aggie spends time during consultations to enable patients to better understand what might be wrong and how to find solutions together.
Aggie and her husband enjoy the outdoors and are members of Triathlon Hawke’s Bay.

Kaweka Hospital’s skilled team of ophthalmologists diagnose and treat diseases of the eye and conditions affecting vision. They treat a wide range of issues including cataracts and those of the Orbit (eye socket), Oculoplastic (eyelids) and Lacrimal (tear ducts).
Common procedures include cataract surgery, treatment of glaucoma, correction of stigmatisms, diabetic retinopathy treatment, vitrectomy, laser treatment and intravitreal injections and repair of retinal detachment.
Dr Ewan Fraser

Ewan grew up in the Scottish Borders and moved to Hawke’s Bay in 2005. He worked in the DHB eye unit until 2021 and was Head of Department for 11 years.
Medical school was split between St Andrews and Manchester Universities before completing registration and training in Ophthalmology in Glasgow and Cardiff. A final fellowship year was undertaken in the Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne specialising in vitreoretinal surgery.

Dr Liz Insull
Urologists diagnose and treat problems of the urinary system (kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra), and of the male reproductive system. Our experienced team treat a wide range of conditions such as incontinence, bladder and urinary tract problems, cancers, prostate concerns, male fertility, and issues of the penis and testes.
Common procedures include treatment of kidney stones (lithotripsy), vasectomy, cystoscopy*, circumcision, TURP (prostate surgery), and bladder tumour and cancer removal.

Originally from Hamilton, Nelson completed medical school through the university of Otago in 2008. Nelson worked in Hawke’s Bay as the urology registrar in 2014 and 2015. He also worked at Palmerston North and Auckalnd prior to completing his training at the Royal North Shore hospital in Sydney Australia in 2019. Following this he returned to Hawke’s Bay as a consultant surgeon with a special interest in Uro-oncology and Uro-reconstruction.
